Welcome to CoCo’s Chitchat! Today I’ll be reviewing a book from one of my all-time favorite authors: Mark Batterson’s Win the Day: 7 Daily Habits to Help You Stress Less & Accomplish More. It released less than two months ago, and happens to fit perfectly with my recent theme of time management!

Since I’ve read and enjoyed many other books from this author, I was super excited to hear about this one and ended up buying it on pre-order. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the book inside, but I just have to say that I love the book jacket! It’s very aesthetically pleasing. XD
True to what I’ve seen in Batterson’s other works, Win the Day is yet another masterpiece jam-packed with complex yet simple nuggets of wisdom. I was texting a friend some highlights that stood out to me as I was reading the introduction, and I felt like I had to share every other line because it was just that good! And that was only the introduction!
So much research had to have gone into this book, as there are historical accounts and dates all over the place. However, it isn’t cluttered or weighed down by these facts at all–each account is skillfully written to contribute to the effectiveness of the book. The author recognizes the importance of past events and draws from the wisdom of those who have gone before us, while simultaneously offering a fresh and innovative perspective on productivity.
The ideas presented throughout the book are easy to follow, and the narrative is super smooth. However, I was a bit confused by the layout of the book itself. The section breaks don’t follow a chronological chapter order; instead, we’re introduced to a section, then a habit, then the chapters that discuss that habit. So it reads like Part 1, Habit 1, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Habit 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Part 2, Habit 3, and so forth. Maybe it’s just me being weird, or a result of my reading it over a course of several weeks, but I always felt a little bit lost in the layout and like I didn’t get a clear grasp on each habit individually. The content of the book was neatly organized and had a consistent theme running throughout, but the skipping around with the numbers disoriented me. It’s not that big of a deal, and certainly not a reason to skip this book, but I thought I’d mention it since that’s what reviews are for. 😉
However, the good news is, that’s the only negative thing I have so say about this book! It was very inspiring to read, and led to my developing/striving to achieve new habits. Since finishing it, I’ve only left my bed unmade once! This is definitely a book that will encourage you to take action, and it offers a starting place to focus your efforts. You won’t find a to-do list with all the things you must do to succeed, but rather universal principles that will guide you in whatever your unique endeavors may look like. It won’t weigh you down with responsibilities, but will instead open your eyes to what is most important so you can focus on winning the day at hand. It also points you to the reason why–we are stewards of God’s time.
Throughout the book, Batterson asks the question: Can you do it for a day? Starting a new habit can be intimidating, and even more so if you’re wanting to start more than one at once (as I was after reading). However, by simplifying the concept to only focusing on one day at a time, it becomes a much more reasonable feat. Of course you can do it for a day! And then you just have to keep going. The only way we win a race is one step at a time; the only way we write a book is one word at a time; the only way we ought to live is one day at a time.
Like any self-help book, Win the Day will not do the work for you. You have to be willing to put in the work and dedication yourself. Blood, sweat, and tears are not included in your purchase. But I do recommend this as a starting point to gain a better understanding of godly habits and how to best steward your time. We all need some godly motivation now and then! (Or every day, haha). There’s a reason Jesus said, “Give us this day our daily bread.”
One last note: there aren’t any discussion questions. That’s something I always look for in a book if I plan to read it with a friend; however, since I was just reading it on my own, I didn’t have any problem with them not being there.
So all in all, Win the Day is a win! I’m thrilled to be able to add it to my shelf alongside my other Mark Batterson books, and I hope to read it again sometime.

I also want to give you guys a quick reminder that today is Ash Wednesday! That means that it’s the beginning of the Lent season–the forty days leading up to Easter. I personally don’t observe Lent in a formal way, but last year I did take the time to read through the four gospels and really enjoyed it. Perhaps now would be a great time to start a new habit!
